ATOMEXPO 2019 to Feature Discussion on the Role of Carbon-Free Generation in the Energy Balance of the Future

A roundtable discussion entitled “Carbon-Free Generation in the Energy of the Future” will be held as part of the ATOMEXPO 2019 International Forum in Sochi on April 15–16, 2019.

The roundtable will bring experts from Russia and around the world together to discuss the key trends in the development of carbon-free energy generation, current and promising business models in the renewable energy market, and possible areas for the development of energy storage units. Special attention will be paid to the place that small nuclear power reactors might take in the future energy balance.   

Chris Gadomski, Senior Nuclear Analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance Limited will give his opinion on the influence of carbon-free energy on the future of the global energy market. The CEO of Novavind, Alexander Korchagin, will talk about how the renewable energies market can be changed using new business models. Denis Borisov of Roland Berger will discuss the impact that the development of the energy storage segment has on the overall market situation. Vasily Savin, a partner at KPMG, will outline the challenges facing the biggest players in the energy industry in today’s climate, as well as possible ways to transform the sector. And RAOS JSC representative Anton Moskvin and Tuomo Huttunen of Finnish Energy will discuss the potential of small and medium-sized nuclear power reactors for the development of nuclear energy in countries that have never implemented it before, as well as for supplying energy to hard-to-reach areas. The roundtable will be moderated by Anton Poryadin, partner at EY international consulting firm. During the opening presentation, which will outline the main focus of the discussion, the participants will be given various scenarios of the development of the global energy industry until 2050 developed by EY in collaboration with Moscow School of Management Skolkovo.

The roundtable will take place on April 15 in the Orange Hall of the Main Media Center. Start time is 2.30pm.

The global energy market is undergoing a transformation. More and more attention is being paid to the issue of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, distributed generation is gradually becoming the preferred business model, and the level of digitization and use of new technologies is growing. This transition process impacts the structure of the global energy balance tremendously, alters the role of key players on the energy market and improves access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy.

The main topic for this year’s Forum is “Nuclear for better life.” For the first time in the history of the Forum, the business programme has been compiled by the International Programme Committee, which is made up of: Director General of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency William Magwood, Director General of the World Nuclear Association (WNA) Agneta Rising, former Chairman of the World Association of Nuclear Operators Jacques Régaldo and former Director-General of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency Luis E. Echávarri, among others. ATOMEXPO 2019 participants (heads of state structures, major companies and public organizations, as well as international experts) will discuss global issues in the development of carbon-free energy, a responsible approach to the environment and natural resources, green investments and international partnerships for sustainable development. The program of the event includes 18 roundtables on current topics. A number of important documents are expected to be signed both between the Russian Federation and various countries, and between the enterprises of Rosatom State Corporation and foreign companies in the nuclear field. The exhibition area will take up over 13,000 square metres.

The 10th anniversary ATOMEXPO Forum in 2018 attracted over 4000 delegates and guests from 68 countries (compared to 65 countries in 2017 and 55 countries in 2016). The exhibition took place on a total area of 20,000 square metres (compared to 12,000 square metres in 2017). Over 600 companies took part in the event. A total of 39 agreements and other documents on cooperation and partnership, including commercial contracts, were signed on the side-lines of ATOMEXPO 2018.
